March 2024 - Karsh Foundation, Boston, USA
Ottawa City Council established the Karsh Award in 2003 to honour the enduring legacy of Yousuf and his photographer brother Malak Karsh. Every four years, a prize is presented to a mid-career local Ottawa artist for their outstanding body of work and significant contribution to the artistic discipline in a photo/lens-based medium. The laureate is also invited to hold an exhibition of their work at the Karsh-Masson Gallery, located in Ottawa’s City Hall. The 2023 recipient is photo-based artist Christine Fitzgerald. Inspired by early photographic techniques, Fitzgerald’s studies of specimens consider natural history collections from the perspective of our present moment of ecological precariousness. This exploration of extinction, impermanence and loss draws largely from the artist’s research during her 2023 residencies at the Canadian Museum of Nature and the Natural History Museum (Tring, UK). Her exhibition, Requiem, is on view May 9 to July 21, 2024.

January 2023 - My “Portraits in Time” series of platinotype portraits of the Horn family were acquired for the permanent collection of Library and Archives Canada. These portraits were inspired by my experience as a visual artist on the CanadaC3 Expedition on the ice breaker Polar Prince across the three coasts of Canada on the occasion of Canada’s 150th anniversary. This project was a collaboration with Kaniehtí:io Horn.

May 2022 – Christine Fitzgerald is one of seven multidisciplinary artists commissioned from across Canada to engage the public in the creation of an art piece during National Ocean Week & Ocean Festival. From June through September 2022, Ocean Week Canada and the Ocean Festival will present artist-led talks, creative community workshops, and immersive experiences in all regions including: Atlantic, St. Lawrence River, Great Lakes, Inland, Pacific, Inuit Nunangat, and Western Arctic. Key themes such as the ocean health, conserving marine life, and the human impact to our local waters and marine life will be explored through art installations, artist performances, and community maker events.
